New things I have learned

Am sorry for not posting more of my journey here, I have learned a great deal and hope you find it beneficial.

Potato starch is nearly every where so please read all packaging for the name, "Potato starch", "Modified food starch " ; This will be unspecified or specified, meaning it will read something like this ' Modified food starch ( Potato, rice )' or just plane ' modified food starch' and now to the list of names add "malodextrin" it is a starch that is some times specified by type of starch and is used as sweetener and as a binding agent in some pharmaceuticals.

While the Malodextrin is a new one I just found I can tell you modified food starch I have found in almost all pre shredded and sliced cheeses, almost all prepackaged precooked chicken, a lot of the breads. Be sure to ask when you are out for dinner if they cook the foods next to each other in regards to potato, if the use the same frier to cook the foods you want in as the potatoes/ french fries. read restaurant ingredients for the food you want as I have found it in KFC's mac and cheese and the baked beans. Almost all gluten free bread uses potato flour so read those labels!! I hope this helps someone out there not go through everything I have so far, my allergy has become worse and if I get to much my throat starts to close, I feel like I am drowning sometimes and clear my trout and gag/cough continuously it seems until it works through.

Most snack crackers and such has modified food starch, have found it in peanut butter syrup used in restaurants to flavor the shake type drinks, in nacho cheese sauces for nachos. some root beer has it.

be safe be well and eat good!!

P.S. a shout out to The Melting Pot who asked about allergies at the time of reservation and went above and beyond to ensure I had a great experience, granted I had to forgo the cheese course yet the did read everything and made sure I ate safe.

potato, potato starch, and Katakuriko. List of potato ladden foods

These are the names, words and terms to look out for Potato starch, potato flour, katakuriko . And the list of foods that will be updated as we find them.

to start with if it is gluten free definitely read the label.

If your out and about at restaurants ask the server about if they fry the wings or baked them and if they use same fryer for onion rings wings and french fries.

Old Chicago will do baked only wings with sauce if requested  !!

UDIS brand: Most UDIS breads have potato starch in them, UDIS is a gluten free option and they do make at least one type with out potato.

VANS: the Vans brand of waffles has potato starch in the ingredients.

progress

So it has been a week since my accidental ingestion of potato substances and I have indeed noticed a marked difference in my dry skin on my face and scalp. My digestion has improved and my metabolism has normalized.
This one is short and sweet I want to get started on the list of foods.

Well after the weekend I am still feeling some ill affects from the inadvertent potato consumption. I do have a slight appetite now and the feeling of over fullness ( a little nausea as well ) only slightly exists. I have noticed it takes about 2 days for the stomach issues to subside as for the skin clearing ( dry skin ) I will have to keep track and keep you all posted to see if anything happens. I do want to start a post to edit that lists things with potato to be wary of.  Please feel free to comment with anything any of you all find.

This blog is going to be the spot where information is shared about potato intolerance ( aka allergy ). So to get it started I wanted to share the personal experiences that brought this to pass.

First off am mid 40's, this is a new issue and not one I am looking forward to, I love potatoes in all forms, salads, mashed, fried, baked, steamed, chip, donut... well you get the picture. Another thing to note I am not "officially" diagnosed this has been from pure observations  and a lot of research by myself and my wife ( who I must give credit for finding the real answer ).

It started when we would eat and I would get a weird sensation over over fullness, like a rock was sitting in my gut, it felt like I was swollen or bloated yet nothing seemed to help and it would last as long as 2 days and during that time I would have no appetite yet I would be hungry, yes I realise that does not seem possible yet until you actually live it it is hard to wrap your mind around. As for narrowing the field to what was doing it was sheer luck and observation.   And actually solidified when I had chosen a different side at a restaurant and my daughter had chosen a 'seasoned' fry, they were different and as I said before I love potato, any way I was feeling pretty good until I tried a couple of her fries, yes it was really a couple, and it only took about 5-10 minutes for the feeling to start setting in. It was in those moment I correlated  the potato to the reaction and there in began the research and experimentation. We thought fried only, yet mashed and baked reacted equally and to out dismay and shock so did sweet potato ( yet to a lesser degree ).  This still did not lead me to allergy, I searched and searched for potato and over fullness, potato and bloating etc and found nothing. My wife one day sat and searched potato allergy and found this website http://www.allergiesexplained.com/pages/Potato%20Allergy%20and%20Intolerance.htm
and there finally enlightenment was found.

Since this time I have accidentally eaten potatoes and known within minutes that I had eaten some for of potato and to my dismay I have found that one needs to ask if the fried object you may want to consume is fried in the same vat as potatoes in order to avoid fully any adverse reaction. onion wings, chicken wings are just a couple.

Last night I had a couple of burgers on bread, we purchased some gluten free bread and as soon as I had eaten the last one it hit! I asked the wife to please check ingredients and sure enough about the fourth one in was potato starch ( flour).

I have found a few other forums regarding potato allergy I will share in the next post as soon as I finish reading them, some are locked and can not be used for discussion any longer, which saddens me, so I figured a active blog, one where the posting of information of items to look out for, symptoms ( most are listed in the link I posted above ) Dry skin is one symptom I am tracking as I have issue with dry skin in facial area even when moisturising. Will keep you up on whether or not I see a difference in my complexion when I know I can avoid accidental potato consumption.
